The book UN TSUGI by Elisabeth Vieira Alvarez proposes a free and non-linear dialogue, sometimes poetic, symbolic, abstract or simply visual, driven by the choreographic proposal of the creation process of UN TSUGI dance piece by the choreographer Rafael Alvarez | BODYBUILDERS & Plural_Dance Company, comprising six performers with and without disabilities/functional diversity.
The photographic images propose a visual dramaturgy parallel to the choreographic and scenographic device of this contemporary and inclusive dance performance, establishing in an autonomous way a visual relationship, sometimes symbolic, creating analogies between body images and between fragments and textures of elements of nature , which, together with the images of movement, carry a fragile, ephemeral and volatile dimension.
The ancient and traditional Japanese ‘kintsugi’ technique, which consists of repairing and connecting broken ceramic pieces using a golden alloy, inspires the origin and title of this project. The bodies that are summoned through the TSUGI project (Japanese: repair, connect, unite), are bodies of resilience, resistance and action, they are bodies of connection. The challenge was to try to ensure that the images and the book did not lose the ephemeral, sensitive, poetic and sometimes unspeakable nature that Dance offers us and that these tree-bodies make us see through their singularity and plurality.
