A WAVE FROM
A DISTANCE
by Rafael Alvarez | BODYBUILDERS (Portugal)
In A WAVE FROM A DISTANCE, on one side and the other, two bodies navigate in silence in a fragile dance which is a wave and a tide of encounters and disagreements. From near and far, the two divers find themselves in an invisible dialogue of memories and stories that not belonging to us, invade our imagination.
An image motivates and inspires the creation of this dance piece, remaining invisible, but present throughout the creative process – “The Great Wave of Kanawaga”, an iconic work by the Japanese painter Hokusai, created in 1830 and reproduced from the mid-1870s, through a series of lithographs based on the traditional Japanese printing technique, known as ukiyo (literally “floating world”). This duo created in 2018 and since then presented in Portugal, France, Japan, Thailand, Laos and Egypt, invites the audience to dive into a journey to Japan to discover, through a silent dialogue, the simplicity and power of the main materials present throughout the piece - light and shadow, body and paper.
This double invitation to travel and stillness, guided by the wave of Hokusai, floats towards the East and the West, in a coexistence of readings and images, where less is more.
Since its creation, the piece has been presented in Portugal (Lisbon, Coimbra, Almada, Vila Nova de Gaia, Barreiro, Ilhavo, Moimenta da Beira, Famalicão, Ponte de Lima, Monchique, Ponta Delgada/Açores), Paris, Cairo, Bangkok, Vientiane/Laos, Yokohama and Tokyo.
