The CHOREO.PORTRAITS II project is returning to Tokyo (2-5 October) for its second edition after completing the first phase of creation and public presentation in Paris (June).
This creative contemporary dance and photography project directed by the Portuguese choreographer Rafael Alvarez, challenges an international and intergenerational collective of participants (professionals and amateurs of all ages) to research, create, and develop, over 4 days of multidisciplinary creative laboratory, an artistic proposal crossing the languages of contemporary dance and photography. The result of this creative process culminates with a public presentation—aa crossover performance between contemporary dance and photography, presented in the form of a choreographic-photographic installation, bringing together in Tokyo a collective of 10 French and Portuguese (mostly over 55 years old) participants along with about 10 Japanese local participants of all ages.
The project aims to foster an artistic and intercultural exchange, promoting the meeting and creative collaboration between participants from different cultural backgrounds, different artistic experiences, and different generations, bringing together participants from Portugal, Japan, and France, among other countries.
The result of this creative process culminates in a public presentation (performance and photographic installation) sharing with the public the work developed by all the participants — a real-time landscape where the body and the photographic image establish a living dialogue between the space of the personal and the collective, of identity and the biographical, echoing the stories and journeys of each participant and the dynamics experienced in each of the cities where the project is implemented.
Subsequently, all the images and photos created in Paris and Tokyo will form part of a collective installation/performance to be held in 2025 in Lisbon (Portugal).
Open to all — all ages, all experiences and backgrounds welcome.
The project is open to all people of any age and of any nationality—professionals, amateurs, and students—interested and motivated in the development of artistic practices linked to the body, movement, and image, with a strong connection to the languages of contemporary dance and performance.
The laboratory and performance will be directed by Portuguese choreographer Rafael Alvarez with the support of the Embassy of Portugal and the support and partnership of the space Ryogoku Bear, a long-time partner of BODYBUILDERS/Rafael Alvarez
